| ORLANDO, FlA. — Orlando is getting a glimpse of the future of transportation with the installation of the newest Connected Vehicle Test Bed along parts of Interstate 4, International Drive, and John Young Parkway. The test bed debuted at the 18th annual Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) World Congress, Oct. 16 – 20. The test bed’s 25 miles of existing roadway feature 29, two-way radio devices that communicate with a fleet of specially equipped vehicles. It is an early test of technology that can lead to safer vehicles and crash-free roadways. |

| Kansas DOT announces two-year schedule of projects |

| TOPEKA, KAN. — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced that hundreds of transportation projects that will preserve, expand, and modernize the Kansas highway system have been scheduled for the next two years. The projects, which will be funded under T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the 2010 Legislature, will improve 1,404 miles of highway and replace 93 bridges. The work will be done in the 2012-13 fiscal years, which began July 1. The estimated cost of the projects is $650 million. |

The TRTP will focus on rural areas of the state and transportation projects that connect users in rural areas to urban markets, jobs, and services. As a component of the SLRTP, the TRTP will provide a blueprint for the development of a more safe, efficient, and less-congested transportation network between population centers, and compliment other transportation plans and programs such as the Texas Statewide Rail Plan, the Texas Airport Systems Plan, and the Unified Transportation Program. |

| MoDOT plan has directed $177 million to highway projects |

| JEFFERSON CITY, MO. — The director of the Missouri Department of Transportation said the agency's plan to reduce staffing, facilities, and equipment has resulted in $177 million being redirected to critical road and bridge projects in Missouri. Kevin Keith told the six members of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission that as of Sept. 30, the department had eliminated 667 staff positions, closed 23 facilities, and disposed of 245 pieces of equipment under its Bolder Five-Year Direction. Those moves have allowed the department to save $177 million since March 2010 when the initial plan was put into action. More than $64 million of that money has been used to improve the state's rural roads. |

| Seattle meets nine-year bridge rehab and replacement target |

| SEATTLE — The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) announced that Bridging the Gap met its first nine-year goal by completing five bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects. This five project goal, a commitment made to voters as part of the levy, was achieved with the on-time and under-budget completion of the East Marginal Way and South Horton Street Bridge. Having achieved this in less than five years, SDOT will soon begin work on another bridge replacement project, the Airport Way S Viaduct over Argo Railroad Yard, and will explore adding two additional structures before the levy expires in 2015. |

This is the first time the Illinois Tollway has used helicopter-based high accuracy mapping LiDAR technology for a corridor survey. |

| RICHMOND — The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has granted the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) preliminary approval to toll I-95 under the Interstate Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Pilot Program. In a Sept. 14 letter, FHWA Administrator Victor Mendez granted the conditional provisional approval and outlined steps required to move forward. Preliminarily, VDOT estimates it could generate $250 million over the first five years of the toll program and over $50 million annually thereafter. |

CDOT proposes widening the interstate to three eastbound lanes between Idaho Springs and the base of Floyd Hill, enlarging the eastbound bore of the tunnels and addressing safety issues on the eastbound highway curves between the tunnels and Floyd Hill. |

The Federal Highway Administration awarded one of its top environmental honors — the 2011 Exemplary Ecosystem Initiative Award — to ADOT for the successful completion of the US 93 Hoover Dam to milepost 17 project, which opened to the public before Thanksgiving in 2010. The project widened US 93 to a modern four-lane divided highway and includes three wildlife crossings for bighorn sheep in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. |
